Orangutan mothers are single parents and the bond they have with their young is one of the strongest in nature.

This painting was created en plein air during Art Gone Wild (2016) at Zoo Atlanta. It features orangutan foster mom Madu and juvenile Keju, the fourth orangutan she has raised. Young orangutans rely on their mothers to learn life skills—such as what to eat and where to find it—before they finally reach independence almost a decade after birth. I’ve observed Madu before in her bond with Remy and I admire her instincts and capacity to nurture
