New Heights, 2023, Acrylic on Canvas, 18 x 24”

FUN FACT

This painting is in the permanent collection of the College of Social Work at Florida State University.

This painting is based on observations I’ve made at a local lake where American lotuses grow wildly. However, at times this same place is desolate and dry, with hardly any signs of life. I’ve taken it as a metaphor for our own vibrancy and the seasons we experience in our lives—nothing is in bloom year-round. Given the journey of the lotus, from the depths of dry muck, to shining brightly above the surface, I see them as a reminder of resilience and self-growth.

In this painting, the lotus flower is shown in bud form as well as in full bloom to celebrate all stages of growth. I’ve included a red-winged blackbird, which is often found at this particular lake, as a further symbol of growth and the ability to soar to new heights.
