Mama Madu, 2017, Acrylic on Canvas, 24 x 12”
FUN FACT
The mother-child relationship between orangutans is crucial to their survival. Orangutans have the longest childhood dependence of any animal in the world.
This painting was created en plein air during Art Gone Wild (2017) at Zoo Atlanta and features resident orangutan Madu and a younger orangutan (Remy). Despite never birthing her own young, Madu has voluntarily cared for and raised several juvenile orangutans as a foster mother. Her maternal instincts were quite apparent in my observations of her, and it was sweet to witness the bonding of these two apes. Their moments together felt to mirror that of a human child and parent.
