Hide and Seek

Hide and Seek, 2017, Acrylic on Canvas, 14 x 18”

FUN FACT

Captive-bred poison dart frogs are usually not toxic due to a difference in diet from those in the wild.

This painting was created en plein air during Art Gone Wild (2017) at Zoo Atlanta in the scaly slimy spectacular exhibit. Since I was a child, I’ve been fascinated by poison dart frogs and the gem-like array of colors and patterns they carry. I had created the background for this painting using an experimental process that organically created the shapes and forms that would become their imagined habitat. The resulting textures reminded me of the sphagnum moss and waterfalls, so it seemed entirely fitting to add in frogs throughout the piece.
